Book summary

Descartes first recounts his education, the books he set aside and the travels that showed him how varied opinion is. He then sets out four rules for conducting his thought, and a provisional morality for living while he doubts. Methodical doubt leads him to the one certainty that withstands it, I think therefore I am, and from there he rebuilds. The work explores knowledge, the place of self-evidence and a science founded on reason rather than authority. He wrote it in French, as a personal narrative, to be read outside the schools.

The plot

A method in four rules. According to this book, we all know how to reason. What we lack is a good method for doing it.

The world of the book

A time when knowledge is changing. In schools, students mostly learn what ancient scholars wrote, such as Aristotle.

The author

A soldier who wants to rethink everything. A pupil at a great school, René Descartes feels he learned few certain things there. At twenty-two, he becomes a soldier.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.
