Book summary

The Trojans have reached the ships and fire threatens the fleet when Patroclus takes Achilles' armour to drive them back. His death at Hector's hands brings Achilles into the battle, with armour forged by Hephaestus and a fury nothing can check. The plain, the river, then the walls of Troy see the two men close on each other, while the city watches. This second volume explores grief, revenge and the pity an enemy can still command. Homer carries the poem to Hector's funeral, after a night in which a father comes to ask for his son's body.

The plot

Armour forged by a god. Achilles, the greatest warrior of the Greeks, has lost his armour. His mother, Thetis, a goddess of the sea, goes to see the smith god. In a single night, he makes a helmet, a breastplate and a…

The world of the book

The gods go to war. The Greeks have been besieging Troy, a city in what is now Turkey, for years; their ships are drawn up on the beach. Between the beach and the city’s high walls lies a plain crossed by a river. In…

The author

A poem sung for centuries. Homer, a Greek poet, lived more than 2,700 years ago. Ancient stories say he went from town to town to sing. After him, reciters learned the Iliad by heart to perform it in public, notably in…

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
