Book summary

One morning Josef K., a senior clerk at a bank, is arrested in his lodgings by two warders who tell him nothing of the charge and leave him free to go to work. The case proceeds without being explained to him, in the attic of a suburban tenement where a court sits among piles of files. K. consults an ailing lawyer, a painter who lives off the judges, and a tradesman swallowed by his own case. Every step draws him deeper into an administration no one has seen the top of. Published after Kafka's death, the novel examines guilt and authority.

The plot

He searches for the court that is trying him. Josef K., a senior clerk at a large bank, is accused without being told of what. He is summoned to court, but no one tells him the time or the floor. When he finally finds…

The world of the book

A large city in Central Europe. The novel never names its city. It has trams and telephones. The hero, Josef K., works at a bank, where he has a large office with an enormous window over the square.

The author

Franz Kafka, a lawyer in Prague. With a doctorate in law, Franz Kafka spends a year training in the courts of Prague. Then he works in insurance. By day, he writes official reports. By night, he writes his own books.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
