Book summary

In 1866 an unexplained sea monster alarms the navies of the world; in July 1867 Professor Aronnax sails to hunt it down. A collision with the monster throws him overboard along with a Canadian harpooner, and his servant jumps in after him: all three are taken aboard the Nautilus, a submarine under Captain Nemo. Guests and prisoners of a man who has broken with dry land, they travel the oceans of the globe with him. The novel explores science, the freedom of a man beyond the laws of any country, and an underwater world still unknown. Verne combines a naturalist's inventory with an adventure narrative, paced by landfalls and storms.

The plot

A walk on the ocean floor. Professor Aronnax, a French scientist, lives aboard the Nautilus, a submarine. One day, Captain Nemo, the master of the ship, invites him to go hunting in his forests. The professor thinks…

The world of the book

The author

A novel written facing the sea. In 1865, the novelist George Sand wrote to Jules Verne. She hoped he would soon take his readers to the bottom of the sea. He liked the idea. That same year, he rented a house in Le…

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
